Growing up in rural
Kentucky has provided me a kinship with nature that inspires my work. Just as
my location serves as a muse, my vivid memory of childhood and adolescence influences my work and enables me to explore the
human condition of growing up. From childhood to adulthood, myths, stories, and
adages lend richness to our visual language. By combing these simple symbols,
volumes can be condensed into one simple image. Combining images, distorting, or drawing upon personal life lessons of growing
up and changing creates a subtle surrealism suiting the abstract concepts symbolized in my work. My aim is to both remind
and commiserate with all those who experience joy and hardships in their personal growth and change.
In my body of work
titled "Deciduous," the symbol of the tree is important for its representation of the strong yet delicate and ever changing
element of humanity. Trees have a rich history as a symbol for that which is
changing, growing, nurturing, and yet vulnerable. Still more complex is their
meaning in modern society as a rural element frequently out of place in the urban landscape.
Like most individuals, I have my own superstitions and stories which find their way into my work. Befitting the nature of subject matter, my work strives to be both curious and beautiful.
